Mountain Leader Reassessment

Image
Congratulations to David who joined me for a one day re-assessment today and passed his Mountain Leader Award. We had a beautiful day on Yr Aran, the daffodils are out in the valley, there are lambs in the fields and snow on the summits. What a wonderful time of year.

Yr Wyddfa Hike and Fly

Image
A little more snow, some sunshine, light winds and atmospheric cloud for a flight off the summit of Yr Wyddfa this morning. I walked up the Rhdd Ddu path which was nice and quiet too. Lovely.

New Video - Raeburn's Gully, Creag Meghaidh

In this episode of my Mountain Days Vlog series I climb Raeburn's Gully, a grade 1 Scottish winter route on Creag Meghaidh, hoping to then fly from the summit back to the car on my lightweight paraglider. Considered one of Scotland’s greatest-ever climbers and mountaineers, Harold Raeburn has left a wealth of first ascents across the Highlands. Raeburn’s Route and Crowberry Gully in Glencoe remain prized winter lines, almost a century after his sad death, and his breathtaking ascent of Green Gully, cutting steps up near-vertical ice with a single ice axe, was almost certainly the hardest ice climb in the world at the time and not superseded in difficulty in Scotland for nearly 30 years. His gully on Creag Meghaidh is at the amenable end of the grade scale but is more sustained than the other obvious choice - Easy Gully - also grade one. It gives continually interesting climbing for the grade and requires good decision making to avoid avalanche danger and good footwork to avoid th...

Ledge Route, Ben Nevis

Image
We’ve rounded off a great week with a lovely day on Ledge Route in some fairly spring like conditions. No wind, lovely views and balmy temperatures. Thanks very much to Mazz, Mark, David and Karl for a superb five days.

Winter anchors

Mozz, Mark, David and I have had a snow skills day today at Aonach Mor which allowed us to fill some knowledge gaps and recover the energy levels a bit. We looked at avalanche knowledge, snow anchors and movement skills as the freezing level rose above the summits. Huw and Karl headed to the Cairngorms and early rumours suggest that they may have climbed ice 😀

Aonach air Chrith North Ridge

Image
We’ve enjoyed another great day of mountaineering today, this time heading to Glen Shiel and climbing Aonach air Chrith North Ridge and around to Maol Chinn-Dearg to give a double Munro count. The views were stunning this morning and then got a bit wilder as the day went on. Ace!

East Ridge of Beinn a Chaorainn

Image
It’s been a beautiful day in the mountains today with lots of fresh snow and some wonderful atmospheric light. We climbed the East Ridge of Beinn a Chaorainn which was plastered! An excellent day, thanks very much all.

Winter mountaineering

Image
It’s the first day of our winter mountaineering and climbing week and Huw and I have been joined by Mark, Mozz, Karl and David. We kicked the week off with a refresher of winter skills and a look at winter ropework at Aonach Nid with a sit start as the gondola wasn’t working 😀 With an improving forecast for the week it was good to have lots of fresh snow on the ground and in the air to refresh avalanche knowledge. We’ve also got a strong team out on our winter skills week which is being headed up by Tarquin.
