Seeking sunshine on Tryfan

Image
A day where a bitingly cold wind made it desirable to stay in the sunshine. With that in mind Fliss, Kate and I concluded our two days of scrambling with Tryfan's  Bastow Buttress and a continuation to the summit via the  North Ridge . Thanks both for a fun couple of days.

Cwm Idwal

In true April form the temperature has markedly dropped from what it's been for the last few days. I've been scrambling in Cwm Idwal with Fliss and Kate on our  Advanced Scrambling Course  where we enjoyed a loop around Cwm Idwal up  The East Ridge of Y Garn , back down into the cwm via the Devils Kitchen path and then back up again by a combination of the beginning of  Idwal Buttress  and the finish of  Idwal Staircase . By happy coincidence the hail and snow showers that fell matched the time when we were walking between routes.   - Huw

Crib Goch

Image
It’s been another beautiful day in the mountains with warm sunshine and a fresh breeze. Fliss and I traversed Crib Goch and Crib Y Ddysgl, descending back to Nant Peris via Llechog having made the most of the bus to get us to Pen Y Pass. Stunning, thanks very much Fliss.

Sunny scrambling

It’s been a beautiful sunny day today but still cold on the tops. Fliss, Rosie, Tim, Connor and I went up Y Gribin and over Castell y Gwynt for the obligatory Cantilever photo before scrambling down Seniors Ridge and Seniors Gully to give a great day out. Thanks very much all!

Scrambling in Eryri

Image
I have been out with Fliss, Rosie, Tim and Connor today for the first day of a Classic Scrambles Week (Fliss) and an Intro to Scrambling Course (Rosie, Tim & Connor). We headed up the North Ridge of Tryfan where we enjoyed dry rock to look at movement skills, route choice, risk management and of course enjoy one of the best grade one scrambles in the UK. It was cold again but dry all day which feels like real progress!

Sunrise on Crib Goch - Ticking off the Welsh 3000s

Image
An early start saw me on the North Ridge of Crib Goch for sunrise this morning. There were a few other people about and it was stunning. Having traversed the ridge I flew down from Bwlch Goch which completes my challenge to fly from every 3000ft summit in Wales. I don’t know of anyone else who has done it but that was never really the point - in fact the whole thing is pointless because it’s a lot quicker and easier to just walk them all 😀 But it’s been a very cool adventure and I’ll put a film together at some point when I’ve got time to edit it!  There’s a couple of summits I can improve on but for anyone who is interested I’ve put all of my routes here:  https://www.expeditionguide.com/snowdonia-hike-fly-paralpinism/

Sunny at the seaside

Image
Rachel, Chris and I have had a lovely day on the sea cliffs on Anglesey today. We kicked off in the drizzle at Rhoscolyn and climbed Symphony Crack. As the sun came out we moved round to Porth Saint and climbed Watering Clown which timed well with the tide and was almost dry 😀 Finally we headed to Castell Helen and finished the day off with Lighthouse Arete Direct in some beautiful afternoon sunshine. Thanks both for a great couple of days. Ace!

Multi Pitch Climbing

Image
I’ve been out with Chris and Rachel today on the first day of our multi pitch climbing course. We headed up Hope on the Idwal Slabs and then they lead the scramble off, including rigging their own retrievable abseil. At that stage the rain and sleet arrived so we headed to the coast in search of dry rock that didn’t quite materialise. A great day out in the mountains but still very cold!
