Y Gribin - Hike & Fly in the Snow

Image
I have a new video out which I shot last week, making the most of the early season conditions and a settled period of high pressure. I head up the Gribin Ridge for sunrise and then fly back down to the Ogwen Valley from the top of Seniors Ridge. I hope you enjoy it.   https://youtu.be/4htqVFBG1YI

Crib Lem Spur

Image
Olivia and I headed to the Carneddau today in the lovely winter sunshine. Walking in from Bethesda we headed to the Crib Lem Spur - a beautiful grade one scramble that we had all to ourselves. There was a sprinkling of fresh snow up high and some good old neve on the plateau. We carried micro spikes today but didn't need them. A lovely day - thanks very much Olivia.

Little & North Gullies on Tryfan

Image
I have been joined by Olivia and Mark for the first two days of this week for some scrambling. It was tough deciding on routes this morning. The snow form last week had largely cleared but there had been another dusting overnight and the freezing level was sat around the summits. We knew the rock would be greasy and the winds were forecast to be strong. We decided to head up Little & North Gullies on Tryfan to tuck out of the wind. I wasn't convinced that it wouldn't be icey at the top so we took winter kit on a just in case basis. As it turned out we didn't need it but better that way round than the other! A great days scrambling, thanks both.

Round Puffin Island

Image
It’s been a beautiful calm morning this morning. I settled off from home in my Wanderer Dinghy with no real plan and very little wind. Within about 10 minutes the wind filled in nicely and I enjoyed a lovely sail around Puffin Island and back. I had the sea to myself and it was lovely to join a few fellow sailors as I came back into the village in the sunshine.

Dawn Patrol

I got out early this morning to make the most of the snow before it potentially disappears this weekend. I headed up the Gribin Ridge for sunrise, flying off the top back down to the Ogwen Valkey. Lovely to be out in crampons so early in the winter.

I had an unexpected day off today so made the most of it with a lovely snowy walk with Bryn and Archie.

New Video: Little & North Gullies on Tryfan

Image
Little & North Gullies take a line to the summit of Tryfan from the Heather Terrace on the mountains East Face. It is a great grade one scrambling route and ideal for when there are strong Westerly winds that would preclude heading onto one of the classic ridge scrambles in Snowdonia. In this episode of my Mountain Days Vlog I head up and then chat through the various descent options - why do so many people get the route down wrong on Tryfan - before flying off on my lightweight paraglider. https://youtu.be/WYLXbixbwTU

Steep Ground

Plenty of giggles and plenty of tapping rocks today on the last day of our ML Training course. Thanks very much folks for a great week, it’s been a real pleasure and enjoy the consolidation period 😀

ML Training Expedition

Image
We have spent the last two days out on an overnight expedition for the ML training course. This normally forms the last two days of the week but with storms in the forecast we brought it forward a day - nonetheless we had a pretty wild night and a very wet and windy second day! We started in Llanfairfechan and walked up over Drum, Foel Fras, Carnedd Gwenllian and onto Foel Grach. Dinner was enjoyed in the summit shelter making for a nice sociable affair. We then did a few hours of night navigation into our camp for the night where some slept and some didn't :-) Today was spent making our way back to civilisation and then enjoying some admin with a hot meal from the Pavilion Cafe.

The Gribin

Image
We had some pretty cool clouds this morning. And then it got wet. Very wet! There was no absence of enthusiasm though from the Mountain Leader training team as we looked at the hazards of steep ground on the Gribin. Good work!
