Broad Gully

Image
Another great day with Rach and Angus as our Grand Tour of Scottish gullies continues. We headed to Stob Coire Nan Lochain today in Glencoe and climbed Broad Gully. Lower down the soft snow meant we were happy moving unroped and as we gained height the consequences of a slip increased as the snow firmed up so we moved into pitching. Typically the summit cleared as we descended but we didn’t feel hard done by 😀

Easy Gully, Creag Meghaidh

Rach, Angus and I headed to Creag Meghaidh today and climbed Easy Gully. There was a beautiful line of steps up it that had consolidated nicely for us. It felt a big place with some impressive rock and ice architecture all around us and some big debris from a couple of days ago. We topped out into the white room with grateful calves and Rach did a great job of navigating us off the summit in some limited vis. Ace day, thanks both.

South Gully, Stob Ban

I am out with Rach and Angus this week for our Scottish Winter Mountaineering & Climbing course . We headed up Stob Ban today as South Gully has been on Rachels tick list for a while and Huw's photos from his traverse of the mountain yesterday had sown the seed with me. As we walked up the valley we could see that the freezing level had risen and sure enough the snow was fairly soft as we approached the route. After a chat at the entrance to the gully we agreed that the forgiving snow and the masses of experience that Rach & Angus have meant that we could move up the gully without a rope to begin with. As we gained height the snow got firmer and so the consequences of a slip increased. We got the rope out to pitch our way up the remainder of the route and past the cornice. The views from the summit were stunning in all directions and the light on our descent was magical. Thanks very much both - mega!

Beinn a Chaorainn

Emma and I have enjoyed a very snowy and sociable day on the East Ridge of Beinn a Chaorainn. I haven’t seen that much snow up there for a long time and it was snowing all day too. Another superb day - thanks very much for a great week Emma 😀👍
